Remote Sensing NDVI

NDVIについて、Applications

NDVI means Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and is used to quantify the amount of healthy green vegetation in a landscape. It was created in the 1970s with the following formula, based on Kodak Color-IR films properties (blue crystals would expose to both blue and NIR !):

However, due to the evolution of material, especially with digital cameras whose silicon is equally sensible over the whole VIS-NIR spectrum, researchers were forced to used either 2 cameras or to take pictures with 2 different filters to be able to calculate this ratio.

LDP invented a specific sensor which can be cost effectively mounted in commercial cameras allowing the NDVI computation in only one shot, and this NDVI is then defined as:

Moreover, LDP introduced an “Enhanced” NDVI (ENDVI) in the case you define your camera’s Red and Green channels as the vegetation’s reflectance and the Blue one as its absorption :

This ratio comes from the fact that unhealthy vegetation loss more reflectance in NIR than in the rest of its spectrum, while LDP’s sensor sensitivity is as below:

Also the image processing involves using a False Color scale to underline the Regions Of Interest; here again, LDP offers both the tradtional (left) and its own Modern LDP (right) NDVI scales (high values are on the top). In LDP scale, the healthy vegetation is thus more intuitively seen as green.

This firmware, called CHDK, is made for the small Canon Point & Shoot cameras in order to add a timed interval shutter mode. It can either be download or provided on a 2GB card by LDP, with a tutorial on its features:

Remote Sensing Explorer (RSE):

Particularly designed for LDP’s cameras, this is their image processing software. It requires a PC with a 64-bit processor. It is freely included with the 2-camera 5-band systems (see above).

The camera sensor is first converted to monochrome by removing the Color Filter Array (CFA), thus making each pixel sensitive to all light frequencies.   Then a  Linear Variable Filter (LVF) is installed on the sensor that progresses from 450nm of the left to 880nm on the right.

UV-VIS-IR cameras

Applications

A UV-VIS-IR camera allows the user to select any desired wavelength by simply choosing the adapted filter (See Filters section), without changing the camera itself.

 

Technology

The commercial cameras have their ICF/AAF (IR cut filter/Anti-Aliasing filter) removed and replace by a clear optical window of the same thickness.

For a monochrome camera, sensitivity will go from 300nm to 1100nm; for a color camera, the CFA (Color Filter Array) is kept and allows sensitivity from 360nm to 1100nm (but UV sensitivity will remain lower).

Many cameras can be converted this way at LDP’s basement, yet here are the standards: Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, GoPro and Pentax.  They have point and shoot cameras, GoPro types, converted cell phones, DJI gyro controlled, DSLR’s, 4/3 cameras, APS and Full Frame cameras.

With an IR-Only camera, the internal IR Cut Filter (ICF) and Anti-Aliasing filter (AA) are removed and replaced with a long-pass infrared filter window. The focal plan is also corrected. The advantage of an IR-Only camera for taking pictures is that you don’t need to add additional filters to your lenses, Auto Focus and Auto Exposure work and you can see through your lens normally if you have a DSLR. It is also possible to get IR-Only at 590nm, 630nm, 665nm, 715nm and 830nm.

 

The NIR cameras Sensitivity goes up to 1100nm; it can detect emitted heat only above 600 degreeC.

Thermal cameras (Sensitivity in MIR 3-6um and/or FIR 8-14um) can not be achieved through conversion.

LDP removes the Color Filter Array (CFA), also know as the Bayer array, of SLR cameras to get a “Black and White” (or more precisely a panchromatic) camera. The loss of color information, which required 4 (RGBG) pixels and absorbed a lot of light, allows a gain in spatial resolution and in sensitivity.

To get an UV-only camera, they further replace the CFA with a special coated UV filter, in their own Class 100 Clean Room. Consumer’s camera sensitivity increases thus by a factor 6 down to 360nm, while enhanced resolution allows HD pictures and movies.

If you want to go further down in the UV with a common camera, you’ll need to use UV lenses; silicon sensors will then allow to see down to 280nm.

ICG Camera and Light

IndoCyanine Green と言うのは

ICG is a fluorescent dye which is used in medicine as an indicator substance (e.g. for photometric hepatic function diagnostics and fluorescence angiography) in cardiac, circulatory, hepatic and ophthalmic conditions. It is administered intravenously and, depending on liver performance, is eliminated from the body with a half life of approx. 3–4 minutes. LDP provides too an ICG writing pen (“UV pen”).

The fluorescence spectrum is very wide. Its maximum values are approx. 810 nm in water and approx. 830 nm in blood. For medical applications based on absorption, the maximum absorption at approx. 800 nm (in blood plasma at low concentrations) is important. In combination with fluorescence detection, lasers with a wavelength of around 780 nm are used. At this wavelength, it is still possible to detect the fluorescence of ICG by filtering out scattered light from the excitation beam.
